FIREWALL: What We Believe - American Exceptionalism

Producer Notes Categories:

In the final installment of the What We Believe series, Bill Whittle looks at how America is indeed exceptional -- a once-in-history success militarily, economically, scientifically and culturally.

You offer up a lot of

You offer up a lot of evidence, but certainly not all of it. Were I to look only at the evidence you've offered, I would absolutely conclude that America is exceptional. But let's examine some other American exceptionalism you might have missed:

America killed the most people ever with a single bomb

America killed hundred of thousands of Iraqi civilians during the Iraq War

America told lies about Saddam and its rationale for war in order to start the Iraq War

America is one of only a handful of nations which have a death penalty for children

America exterminated the American Indians in order to steal their land

America gives more aid to Israel than to any other country, despite Israel's continued bellicosity

America promulgated the economic disaster we now find ourselves in upon the rest of the world through exportation of its corrupt banking system and derivatives

America claims to be a capitalist nation, but only the small are allowed to fail; Fortune 500 firms with deep pockets of political donations are rescued from their failures

I could go on and on, because I this is so much fun :)

America kept blacks enslaved well beyond the time that civilized nations outlawed slavery, and white America gained incredible wealth from that slavery

American forces Americans to pay the highest drug prices in the world, foisting most of the world's pharmaceutical R&D on the backs of Americans

Americans no longer maintain state militias, yet still insist that everyone is entitled to possess firearms

#1, 8, 11 & 12 are true. The

#1, 8, 11 & 12 are true. The rest are falsehoods of one variety or other. Fore example, #10, slavery: I know of one country that outlawed slavery before the US: Great Britain. But that was thanks to one man: William Wilberforce. It just looked like a lot of nations because Great Britain covered a lot of territory in 1805.

Now, the truth:
1 Yes, America used the bomb...for the express purpose of bringing a potentially long, ruinous war to a close with a stunning bit of drama. And drama it was. America had already shown that a conventional bombing run could be more destructive than The Bomb.

8. Bailouts for giants: agreed.

11 & 12 (drug R&D and2 guns). Agreed...two more points in favor of Whittle's exceptionalism.

Thank you so much for what

Thank you so much for what you do every day.

Your segments on "Take a movie to work" got me wondering if you had seen the series Firefly and the sequel movie "Serenity" by Josh Whedon? While at first blush it may seem similar to another Cameron-like soldier fighting the evil military, what tremendously appeals to me is that the hero is fighting the ultimate giant government that believes they decide what is best for the people and that the Government can make people "better". To me it celebrates individual freedom and responsibility. Not to mention the theme "you can't take the sky from me".

A fellow pilot.
